As part of its 2016 public awareness campaign, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has announced that October will mark the beginning of their #Chiropractic1st theme and hashtag. In the face of a nationwide opioid abuse epidemic, #Chiropractic1st advocates for a conservative approach to pain management where chiropractic services are the first line of defense against pain.

For those living with either acute or chronic pain, such as those injured in motor vehicle collisions, opioids are often turned to first by prescribing physicians. But the numbers indicate that opioids may be doing more harm than good.

ryanAccording to the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP), more than 259 million opioid painkiller prescriptions were written in 2012. The number of overdose deaths involving prescription opioids is four times higher than that same figure in 1999. Perhaps most shocking of all, overdose deaths related to opioid abuse have risen in every county of every state since 1999.

The alarming overuse and misuse of opioids has caught the eye of the Center for Disease Control (CDC); conservative care options such as chiropractic care are now preferred over opioids for treating chronic pain. Chiropractic care effectively treats acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries, like those suffered in automobile collisions, while potentially avoiding the risks of prescription opioids.

At Hillcrest Chiropractic, we utilize a variety of treatment types, including safe and gentle joint manipulation and mobilization, to treat musculoskeletal and nervous system injuries. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Thomas today and get on the path toward optimal health.
