Are you sitting down? You may want to stand up before you read this important news: spending too much time sitting down is now the fourth leading cause of premature deaths worldwide.

Prolonged sedentary time (usually defined as spending eight hours a day or more off one’s feet) has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes, according to a 2015 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The average U.S. adult now spends 10 hours sitting each day—so much that even an hour of vigorous exercise can’t counterbalance the deleterious effects of that much low energy-expending behavior.

Given the prevalence of sitting, it’s no surprise that eight out of 10 Americans now say they suffer from back pain. Of that population, at least 40 percent blame the long hours they spending sitting.

The truth is that the discs in your back are designed to expand and contract regularly. Physical activity (not just standing upright) allows the back to absorb blood and nutrients. In contrast, prolonged sitting compresses your back, leading to less flexibility over time. Too much sedentary behavior also increases your risk of a herniated disc.
